SEO vs AEO vs GEO: A Simple Guide for Malaysian Businesses

SEO helps search engines understand and present your website. AEO makes your content easier to use as an answer. GEO focuses on how generative AI systems understand and may reference your business. Their strongest foundation is the same: accessible, useful and accurate content.

SEO: Help customers find relevant pages

Search Engine Optimisation covers both the content people read and the technical foundations that allow search engines to access it. A useful service page needs to explain the service, who it is for, coverage, evidence and how to enquire. It also needs a descriptive title, clear headings and links from relevant pages.

For example, a Malaysian transport company can explain vehicle types and suitable cargo rather than filling a page with repeated “transport Malaysia” phrases. Search visibility is valuable when the page answers the requirement behind the query.

AEO: Make answers easier to understand

Answer Engine Optimisation is an industry term for presenting information as clear, direct answers. Common questions about price factors, coverage, requirements or timelines should have useful answers near the relevant service details.

A website designer might explain what a quotation includes and what changes the price. A parish website might show the current schedule and directions clearly. Headings, short explanations and accurate facts help both readers and systems interpret the page. A list of vague FAQs added only for search engines does not achieve that.

GEO: Build clear context for AI systems

Generative Engine Optimisation concerns the way AI systems interpret and may cite information. Consistent business facts, original case studies, named expertise and trustworthy references can make your content easier to assess. Avoid invented results, unsupported awards or claims that a service controls AI recommendations.

Different AI systems use different retrieval methods. There is no universal submission that guarantees a business will be recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot. Google says its existing SEO best practices apply to AI features in Search and that no special AI schema or separate optimisation is required.

How the three work together

Imagine an Ipoh accounting firm. SEO makes its actual services and pages accessible and relevant. AEO provides direct answers about the information a prospective client should prepare. GEO benefits from a clear firm identity, accurate credentials and evidence that can be interpreted consistently.

One well-written service page can support all three. You do not need three duplicated versions of the same page or repetitive pages for every nearby town. Start with customer needs and business facts, then make the structure clear.

What to improve first

  1. Check that important pages load, are indexable and use the right canonical URLs.
  2. Explain each core service clearly, including real coverage and enquiry requirements.
  3. Add genuine project examples and keep claims within the available evidence.
  4. Answer the questions customers actually ask before buying.
  5. Connect service pages, case studies and resources with descriptive internal links.
  6. Use appropriate structured data that matches what people can see on the page.

The SD Logistic Agency case study and SFDS Sitiawan case study show different information needs and delivered website work. They demonstrate structure and practical scope, not guaranteed ranking or AI citation results.

Measure each goal honestly

Use Search Console to review indexed pages, impressions, clicks, queries and average position for Google Search. Compare the same reporting periods and filters. For local enquiries, review available profile performance data and record which contacts turn into suitable leads.

For AI visibility, document the platform, date, question, response and whether it accurately names or cites the business. An occasional mention is an observation, not a stable ranking. Search Console’s Search reporting includes AI-feature traffic within its reporting; it is not a separate universal AEO/GEO score.
